We were very fortunate recently to spend 3 nights at Burnt Out Lodge. It is a truly unique place to relax. Your first view of the log cabin lodge reveals an unpretentious structure that is very roomy inside with a large common room that serves as a gathering/breakfast space, seeming to be, with the loft, a nice facility for groups. The Lodge is constructed of logs that remained after a fire consumed 12,000 acres including much of the ranch. The hosts Ruth and Blick shared their story about the building of the lodge which we found fascinating. Our rooms were very spacious with cathedral ceilings with outside entrances/porches. A pond lies just outside the Lodge and a stream just steps further(our fishing skills were too limited to take advantage of those opportunities). Cattle graze all around the site as part of its ranch setting in the coulee and we saw turkeys and deer along the road. Breakfasts were simple but good with large portions and very accommodating (we needed breakfast at 7 AM and it was on the table right on time each day). The long rock/dirt lane road made us wonder whether we were in the right place but signage assured us that we were. The road also encouraged us to stay in during the evenings which was fine for us and resulted in a very tranquil stay. This was our first exposure to Montana “ranch” life and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Just the beautiful setting we were hoping for! Our daughter was looking for a causal, comfortable venue for a country style wedding. The Burnt Out Lodge was perfect! Not a neighbor in site, so peaceful, full of wildlife, and the stargazing at night – breathtaking.

The green, grassy hillsides were an amazing backdrop for pictures, and the lake and colorful flower garden were perfect for a picturesque outdoor wedding space. The inside of the lodge with all the log walls, decorations, and spacious air-conditioned room(s), was the perfect setting for the Friday night rehearsal/dinner, and the Saturday wedding. All the tables and were provided on site, however we did add some white chairs, and decorations as finishing touches to personalize for the bride and groom.

The commercial kitchen made cooking a wide variety of buffet style meals, and baking all the amazing cakes/cupcakes, for the wedding a breeze. The kitchen had everything we needed, and then some. The walk-in refrigerator and separate walk-in freezer were a blessing!

The added bonus of having a wedding venue where family could stay, was the icing on the cake (no pun intended). Each room had its own private bathroom, and more than enough room if you needed to add a hide-a-bed (provided on site). The property easily accommodated approx. 140 people and cars for the day’s events.

Ruth was awesome to work with. She allowed us to preview the lodge a couple of times, as we were from out of state. She was very helpful, and prompt to respond to any questions, and assist us whenever needed. We were very grateful that she and her family allowed us to share her beautiful home to make a lasting memory for all who visited. We only hope that next time we come to the Burnt Out Lodge, we will be there for a more relaxing event….until next time.

The facilities were very homey! The views were amazing. The linens and beds were clean, comfortable, and plentiful. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, and serving utensils. The high school students did not enjoy the lack of cell service but the adults were in heaven to be disconnected 🙂 There was WiFi to allow connection to the internet when needed or desired.

Thank you so much for sharing your AMAZING facilities with us. The kids loved the atmosphere and the space was perfect for our needs. If we do the event in Big Timber again, we would love to stay with you!

We want to thank you Ruth Whitham Drange with family for a great experience at burnt out Lodge!!! We spent 25 days in the US, and while we planned this trip, we want to see as much as possible of the US. We visited Las Vegas, LA, Seattle and many other place’s. BUT when we came to the Burnt out Lodge, we all knew that this is the place we will spend most of our time next time we visit the US!!! We had a fantastic time, and hope you will take the time, and look trough the photos in the comments below 😀 A great experience to see when they moved the cattle with cowboys and cowgirls just outside the Lodge!

If you want to be far from the maddening crowds this is the place… A nice sense of remoteness… yet there’s great Internet connection if you have to get back into civilization for business or pleasure. The owners were very responsive to the one small problem we had. This is a most unusual facility more bedrooms and bathrooms and you can count and a great big grand Lodge or grand room. The pond is beautiful to look out over any time a day but especially in the evenings by the is also a great fishing pond as my grandchildren found out. It’s a perfect retreat for any large group of people

We spent an amazing two weeks at the Burnt Out Lodge in July. We had a great time celebrating my mom’s 70th birthday. There are 6 bedrooms, and each has a private entrance. There was plenty of room for our extended family. The lodge is beautiful! We immediately fell in love with it. We spent family time fishing, hiking, star gazing, visiting, and cooking! The kitchen in absolutely fabulous! I miss it! The walk in cooler and freezer were incredible. Every house should have one! Thank you so much to Ruth and her husband for building such an amazing facility.  ~ Libby

What a magnificent lodge! We love its secluded location. The rooms are so nicely decorated and so spacious. Our best place was the kitchen with its commercial stove and walk-in cooler allowing us to make cooking for a large number of people a real pleasure. Coming from France, this lodge was even more western and wild, wild, wild west than we had expected. We have been so impressed by the beauty and convenience of this large lodge that we almost want it to stay a secret shared only with special people. ~ Marie

Burnt Out Lodge was the perfect place for a family reunion of nearly 45 attendees. This included a variety of ages from toddlers to 80+. The Lodge itself was our headquarters and housed nearly half of our group. The others enjoyed either tents or RV’s in close proximity. The large walk-in cooler and freezer, as well as on-site ice-maker were a big hit. The kitchen is where much of the visiting took place, and this kitchen was absolutely amazing. The Drange family were wonderful hosts and all expectations were met during our weekend. They accommodated every request. Our family enjoys music, and the piano was well-used over the weekend. There was plenty of room for outdoor games and events were planned accordingly. There were a few that drove to town for forgotten items – otherwise all chose to stay at the Lodge and just enjoy the time with family. We will definitely consider using this location again for other family gatherings.

The scenery surrounding the lodge is filled with beauty and never once disappointed throughout our entire stay. With every light change during the day, you noticed more and more. The lodge was built with extreme craftsmanship and was clean and inviting from the moment we walked through the door. The gourmet kitchen was a dream to cook in and has given me ideas for my home kitchen remodel. The only drawback was that we didn’t have more time to stay there and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. We will be back for sure and this time will make sure we have plenty of time to take in all the splendor this lodge has to offer.

Big Sky Country at it’s Best!

The lodge was great for our family over Thanksgiving week. The ladies loved the big kitchen with anything a cook could want or need. The laundry room was very handy. The bedrooms were spacious and very well decorated. Plenty of space for everyone to have there own area, yet a common area where we could all get together. The lodge setting along Upper Deer Creek is wonderful, with Mule Deer plentiful on the drive in and around the lodge. It was perfect for taking walks in the warm November sun. It is only minutes to Big Timber with plenty of choices for shopping and eateries! We had a great time and will be back again!
